El control del Consejo Provincial de Lima sobre los teatros chinos estaba motivado por las características de las obras teatrales como la duración de las funciones y la sonoridad de la música que se contraponían al orden público y generaba conflicto con los vecinos de Lima.

<p>Crónica local. Teatro chino.— (…) Para concluir diremos que la compañía que actualmente trabaja, se mandó traer de California y consta de 75 personas. La empresa es una compañía anónima de diez socios, la mayor parte negociantes chinos, establecidos en nuestro mercado, y algunos antiguos esclavos, hoy capitalistas. Para las personas que tuvieren curiosidad de ver, siquiera por una vez, el teatro, haremos estas convenientes advertencias: las representaciones tienen lugar dos veces por semana, es decir, jueves y domingo. Comienzan á las 7 de la noche, la platea vale un peso, y dos soles todo un palco con asientos y entradas. El local es muy espacioso, los actores viven en el mismo teatro, y la empresa costea la comida, fuera de un sueldo mensual que no baja de 50 soles, ni excede 100. Uno de los chinos tiene el teatro por negocio, paga de su cuenta al dueño 400 pesos mensuales de arrendamiento, y lo da de balde a la compañía. Pero en cambio tiene el privilegio de arrendar todas las dependencias, que tiene arreglados como un verdadero hotel, del que saca todos sus gastos, mas una competente utilidad. Dentro del mismo teatro hay una cocinería, en que todo es al estilo chino, desde el té sin azúcar en microscópicos posillos hasta el famoso pato y los nidos de golondrinas. Inútil es decir que el opio transciende por todas partes, si embargo no es permitido en la sala de espectáculo: hay un sitio especial, que le llamaremos opiagía, por no poderle dar nombre de tabagía. <p>Teatro chino — Ayer funcionó por primera vez la compañia dramática formada por hijos del imperio celeste. El teatro chino está situado en la calle del "Rastro de Santa Clara”. En el primer departamento se encuentra la boleteria y se penetra al lugar en que están colocados el proscenio y la platea, por un largo callejon perfectamente aseado. El proscenio está situado á dos varas de altura sobre la platea y tiene poco mas ó menos diez varas de largo y cinco de ancho. En la platea, que es bastante estensa, hay muchas bancas y en el fondo cuatro palcos. Detras del proscenio está el lugar que tienen los cómicos para vestirse y en el hay tres hileras de cajoncitos que contienen, los primeros, una gran cantidad de patillas, los segundos pinturas de muchas especies, y los terceros, los vestidos destinados a representacion. A las doce del dia la orquesta compuesta de cinco músicos, toco una brillante chinfonia, que aturdió á la concurrencia; el instrumento del que parece Director, se compone de dos palitos que hace sonar sobre una piedra: los demas instrumentos, son una bandolina, dos enormes platillos de cobre, una especie de perol sostenido en un poste y un violin chinesco. Terminada la sinfonia, principió la representacion en que tomaron parte lo menos, treinta actores-sentimos no poder esponer el argumento del drama; pero se nos ha asegurado, que la accion tiene lugar en la época de las guerras en que fuerop vencidos los tartaros. EI Emperador al regresar á la capital, se encuentra con una formidable revolucion, que llega á sofocar con el empleo de la fuerza: durante la representacion, continua tocando la orquesta. La función termino a las cuatro de la tarde. Los vestidos que se exhibieron son muy lujosos. En la noche tuvo lugar la segunda representacion, en que no hubo ninguna cosa notable. La concurrencia á ambas funciones ha sido muy numerosa, notandose en ella personages de importancia y señoritas de corsé y crinolina. Se nos asesgura que los empresarios llevan gastados mas de once mil pesos en el arreglo del local y en la traslacion de treinta actores desde California al Callao —Deseamos á los empresarios un buen éxito en todas los representaciones de la compañia. Lo que mas agradó á la concurrencia no-asia-tica fueron los golpes que se dan los actores: uno colocado sobre tres mesas a cuatro varas de altura, se dejó caer sobre otro con toda fuerza y le dio en el pecho un fuerte golpe con los pies, cayendo ambos patas arriba sobre el tablado. Nos ha parecido muy poco decente que las asiáticas practiquen en la escena actos repugnantes.</p>
