En la noche, Arancibia me invita al Teatro Chino, situado en el barrio de este nombre. Nada me fue más repugnante que atravesar un largo pasadizo con piezas a ambos lados, todas llenas de chinos jugando a su modo, unos desnudos y otros medio vestidos y todos hablando y gesticulando cual una manada de monos. Por lo menos habrían 500 chinos ocupados en sus juegos. Concluido este pasadizo se llega al teatro, de regulares dimensiones y de la misma forma que todos los que conocemos. Solo que el procenio no tiene telón de boca, de modo que se ve el arreglo del escenario y en él cruzando en todas direcciones a los chinos encargados de su arreglo. Por esto se oyen frecuentemente fuertes diálogos entre los que se sientan en la platea y aquellos sirvientes, tal vez causado por algún dicho punzante del público. Mediante la amabilidad de un joven chino, nacido en el Perú, nos introducimos por entre bastidores y vimos los aprestos de la función. Examinamos los trajes, que son magníficos, y las colgaduras, de fina seda. Después nos retiramos a buscar un palco. La entrada no cuesta un centavo a los oficiales. Yo me instalé en un palco al parecer reservado, pues era el más lujoso de todos. Nadie me siguió, pues los compañeros (unos 5 de nuestro cuerpo, que acababan de llegar) no creyeron prudente entrar a él. Sin embargo, yo me senté con toda gravedad. A las 7 de la noche empezo la función. La que llamaremos orquesta empezó a formar un ruido inmenso, atronador, con sus instrumentos de lata, que por nada no me dejaron sordo. Luego entraron al escenario siete personajes, dos con grandes barbas negras y otros dos con ídem plomas. Los acompañaban 2 mujeres muy ricamente ataviadas a la usanza china. Todos estos personajes gesticulaban, gritan como gatos, ya se hincan, ya se paran, mientras la orquesta continúa con su endemoniado ruido de latones. La cabeza se me quiso descomponer con ese estruendo nunca oído por mí. A este tiempo llegaron a mi palco tres señores, que después supe eran el Cónsul de China, el de Portugal y no sé cuál otro más. El dicho chino se sonreía al oírme dar a todos los diablos con tal música. La tal función era una ópera a la usanza china, y es de las más aceptadas en el barrio asiático. La platea se veia hastante concurrida de sombreros de pita blanca. Ni un aplauso o tal vez porque no lo acostumbran los señores canacas. Gran número de soldados de varios cuerpos de nuestro ejército también se veían en galería y platea. El primer acto duró como hasta las 10, y sin interrumpir la función un segundo ni cambiar decoraciones, empezó el segundo acto. Y esto lo supe por el Cónsul chino, quien nos explicaba el contenido de cada escena de la ópera. Los chinos gustan mucho de la bulla, y por esto es de no asistir a ninguna de sus fiestas.
