<p>Cronica local. El teatro chino. — Pocas serán las personas del país que hayan asistido á las representaciones dramáticas, trágicas y cómicas de los hijos del celeste imperio. Ellas merecen no obstante ser vistas, aunque no fuera sino como novedad, maxime cuando la policía esta alerta para evitar toda clase de desordenes. Las funciones chinescas empiezan por lo regular á las siete de la noche y concluyen a las tres o cuatro de la mañana. Por eso es que los chinos contratados, piden licencia á sus patrones con antelación y permanecen en el local del teatro hasta que se abre la casa á la que pertenecen. De suerte que no es extraño que el señor Intendente lo hubiese encontrado anoche en número tan considerable. Sin desconocer el colo que impulsa á este digno funcionario para vigilar las reuniones antedichas, creemos que no se debe privar á la desgraciada raza que hoy reemplaza á la de los esclavos, de las únicas diversiones á que pueden entregarse en un país de costumbres tan opuestas á las suyas. <p>En el Teatro Lima se efectuó la función de beneficio para las víctimas de la inundación china Como estaba anunciado en el Teatro “Lima” se realizó el Miércoles 21 de los corrientes, la velada que organizara la Sociedad Artística China; con el fin de arbitrar fondos de auxilio para enviarlos a las víctimas de la inundación que últimamente se produjo en la parte central de la China. La función comenzó 15 minutos antes de las 9 p. m. y se prolongó hasta pasadas las 12 de la noche. El Teatro estaba completamente atestado de espectadores y presentaba un aspecto animadísimo. El escenario había sido arreglado especialmente con muebles de ébano y decorados chinos. La Sociedad Artística China hizo que sus socios participaran en un hondo drama, pleno de emotividad y salpicado de situaciones hilarantes. Los actores desplegaron con gran eficiencia sus dotes logrando que el público aplaudiera frenéticamente en los intervalos premiando su lucida actuación. Un grupo de señoritas y miembros de la Institución colocó escarapelas entre todos los asistentes contándose entre ellos al Excmo. Sr. Dr. Li Tchum, Ministro de la República China, quien concurrió acompañado del personal de la Legación. La función resulto un verdadero éxito por lo que tenemos que felicitar no solo a los que en ella intervinieron directamente sino también a todos los asociados de la entidad que auspiciaba desde que la mira no podia ser más desinteresada y humanitaria: la de contribuir a que desparezca la situación de penuria en que se debate actualmente parte la nación china. “ORIENTAL” envío a su fotógrafo, el que con su lente sacó la impresión que reproducimos en esta página.</p>

Reúne expedientes que tratan fundamentalmente sobre las regulaciones y restricciones impuestas por el Consejo Provincial de Lima a los teatros chinos, las condiciones de seguridad y salubridad de los teatros y los comercios de venta de opio, alcohol, prostitución y juegos de azar en el interior de los locales donde se encontraban ubicados los teatros chinos. El control del Consejo Provincial de Lima sobre los teatros chinos estaba motivado por las características de las obras teatrales como la duración de las funciones y la sonoridad de la música que se contraponían al orden público y generaba conflicto con los vecinos de Lima.
