Existe aquí, en nuestra capital polvorienta y anti-higiénica, con blasones virreynales más o menos averiados, todo un barrio que podría [lla blasones virreinales más rimos] a la extensa zona urbana comprendida entre las calles de Hoyos y Acequia de Islas; pulula, vive por allí, hormiguea, diremos mejor, toda una colonia celeste que sin olvidar sus costumbres originarias ha luchado por adaptarse a nuestro medio. Al recorrer estas calles en las que el desaseo es, desde luego, mayor en las otras, —lo primero que se nota es su aspecto típico, singular: algo nuestro y mucho de occidental. —Durante el día, al paso del tranvía por o a calles, el transeúnte lo primero que nota es una muchedumbre abigarrada y heterogénea que invade las pequeñas cocinería, cuyas viandas groseramente condimentadas despiden un olor acre y penetrante; diseminadas en todo el barrio se encuentran casas de compra-venta, joyerías de baja ley, notando e por doquiera los caracteres de la escritura asiática trazados en áureo color. Terminado el día, el panorama cambia por completo; las quietas horas de la noche cobijan otra actitudes y desenfrenan otros placeres: ya es la buscona de rostro con groseros afeites y perfume barato que atrae la atención del viandante, con una estridente carcajada; ya el chino tahur, de rostro enjuto y mirada cristalina, que disputa los azares de una última partida y mientras en la atmósfera flota un vaho de opio y de tabaco, lejanamente se percibe el canto chino destemplado y agudo, ligado al sonido de violines y tamboriles. Estamos en pleno barrio chino. HACIA EL TEATRO CHINO: — En una calle angosta y alargada, cuyos extremos cierran la del Carmen San Bartolomé, se encuentra el teatro "Delicias", levantado hace apenas unos cuantos meses. Este edificio, de construcción sencilla y moderna, representa un esfuerzo muy laudable para incrementar el ornato urbano y apartar en las horas de descanso a los miembros de la colonia asiática de los garitos y fumaderos de opio. Ocupa un amplio terreno, que se ha sabido aprovechar para dar al nuevo teatro todo género de comodidades. La sala confortable y bien ventilada; la platea con su natural gradiente para el espectáculo así como sus filas de palcos y galerías amplias, le dan aspecto de teatro. El pasadizo de entrada, bastante ancho y bien pavimentado, presenta lateralmente compartimentos en donde se han establecido un buen salón de billares y una heladería. Al lado izquierdo del escenario, se encuentran los camarines de los artistas que están bien distribuídos y son cómodos. Hacía la derecha, en el pasadizo de entrada, está la oficina del Gerente de la compañía y de los servicios de administración. Como hemos dicho anteriormente tanto la platea como las dos filas de galerías y palcos ofrecen toda clase de confort y elegancia. LOS ARTISTAS Don Federico Tong, el activo empresario y gerente de la compañía del teatro "Delicias", en su deseo de completar la obra que con tanto entusiasmo se había impuesto, después de difíciles gestiones logró conseguir que una compañía artística asiática hiciera viaje especial a esta ciudad, para ofrecer una serie de espectáculos cultos. La compaña que actualmente funciona en el teatro "Delicias" consta más o menos de cuarenta personas, contándose entre ellas dos tiples,-ahora si auténticas- que gozan de renombre en su país; son figurillas diminutas de ojos negros y rasgados, de movimientos suaves y rítmicos que despiertan una especial curiosidad. Al lado de estos "celestes bibelots" se destacan las figuras de dos viejos mandarines, rígidos, graves, de tez pálida y que traen a la memoria las descripciones maravillosas de Pierre Loti. Por último, al lado del conjunto que acabamos de reseñar, se destaca una niña de 8 a 10 años. que según dicen, los entendidos en los espectáculos del teatro "Delicias" es una promesa de grandes y próximos triunfos, Mucho podríamos agregar sobre las impresiones recibidas en nuestra visita al teatro chino pero nos reservamos para un artículo más amplio.
